Grand Prize:

rugfrontFlowers & Flame, 1990
36″ square hand-hooked rug
by Margaret “Peg” Dwinnell (1916-2012) of Montpelier VT

A gift to NorthWoods by her family

Peg was a lifelong artist. She loved working with color and composition. She first took up oil painting, then tole painting (stencil on velvet), quilting, and finally rug hooking.

With rug hooking Peg found her true artistic calling. She loved frequenting rummage sales to find good quality woolen clothing that she could cut up to use in her rugs. If she didn’t like the colors she found, she often dyed her own wool using natural plant dyes such as onion skins.

She only designed one rug, preferring to use the designs of others putting her stamp on the rug with her choice of color and texture.

When she was younger, she was involved with the Green Mountain Rug Hookers attending camps, classes, and exhibiting. Her rugs were primarily given to her family members and donated to different organizations to use in raffles.

She finally gave up rug hooking at age 93 complaining that it hurt her shoulder too much. At that point, she took up knitting, making hats and mittens for children for charity.
