The NorthWoods Stewardship Center is hiring Sustainable Forestry Interns for a 10-week summer season. Interns will gain experience while working with Forest Stewardship staff on forestry, conservation, habitat management, and landowner outreach projects.  NorthWoods is a non-profit conservation organization serving the communities of northern Vermont and New Hampshire through our Education, Conservation Corps, Conservation Science, and Forest Stewardship programs. Monitoring Climate Resilience with Ali Kosiba

In 2023, with the support of the Society of American Foresters (SAF) Kurt Gottschalk Science Fund, the NorthWoods Stewardship Center partnered with UVM Extension Forester Ali Kosiba to establish climate resilience monitoring plots in the NorthWoods demonstration forest. Using protocols developed by UVM Extension, NorthWoods forestry staff and interns collected data that will be used to evaluate a forest stand where past timber harvesting was designed to improve climate resilience, bird habitat, and other ecological values. Level 3- Saturday, September 16, Level 4 - Sunday, September 17 Cost: $220 per level Ready to step up your chainsaw game? Levels 3 and 4 give experienced sawyers the skills to deal with challenging trees and hazardous situations in the woods. Level 3 focuses on trees with heavy lean, compression/tension, and limbing/bucking techniques. This June the Forest Stewardship Institute at NorthWoods assisted in organizing two birding events to educate the public on the importance of bird habitat in Vermont, how land managers can work to create and manage important habitat features, and how to identify birds by sight and sound. Timber Harvesting with Wildlife Habitat in Mind

Strapping on snowshoes and bundling up for a cold afternoon out in the woods, landowners residing within the Bean Brook watershed in Newark met earlier this month to tour a recently completed timber harvest.
