Now Hiring for 2024

USFWS Internships

Each year the NorthWoods Stewardship Center employs a staff of motivated, mature, and skilled team leaders to run its summer crews. Crew Leaders and Assistant Crew Leaders are chosen for their ability to effectively coordinate and challenge their crews. They must demonstrate flexibility, organizational skills, a solid work ethic, and a positive and inspirational attitude. Crew members are chosen from candidates who show motivation, maturity, and enthusiasm in working hard and learning new skills. Although conservation and work skills are valuable, being able to work with others in a team environment is essential.

Employment Details

Employment Season

The summer work season varies by crew but typically spans 4-6 weeks from mid-June to early August. Professional Crews may work extended seasons, working from the spring through the fall, depending on crew. Crew Leaders and Members work 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm daily.

Leaders receive professional conservation and skills training prior to the season. Crew members participate in a brief orientation training as well as on-the-job training throughout the summer.

Wages

We strive to offer competitive hourly wages for our crew members and leaders, varying by position, experience, and crew. Our rates are updated yearly and can be viewed in each job description.

Accommodations & Overnights

NorthWoods sponsors both residential and non-residential crews. Local crews meet each morning and return home in the afternoon, with evenings and weekends off. Overnights may be scheduled for some projects.

YCC Crews based at regional National Wildlife Refuges meet each morning and return home in the afternoon with evenings and weekends off. Some camping may be required. Crew leaders may stay at NorthWoods or regional YCC facilities, depending on availability. Accommodations vary by location but generally include sleeping quarters and access to kitchen and bath facilities.

Crews stationed in the backcountry work on the most remote and challenging trail projects in Northern VT & NH. These crews spend Mon-Fri living and working out of backcountry “spike” camps and return home on the weekends. This is a great experience to gain trail building and wilderness living skills.
