SUMMARY:Forest Thinning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Do you have spruce-fir stands or mixed softwood and hardwood stands that need thinning? Is it something you think you could do yourself if you knew how? NorthWoods Stewardship Center along with VWA can help! \nJoin NorthWoods Director of Forest Stewardship Jenny Newland and landowner Al Robertson for a forest thinning workshop. \nWorkshop Basics: \nLocation: Pfälzerwald Tree Farm\, 1619 Berry Hill Road\, Sheffield\, Vermont\nDate: Saturday\, August 8 th \, 9 AM—3PM \nThe workshop will include educational training\, demonstrations\, and hands-on work in the forest: \n\nTypically described as pre-commercial thinning\nThinning Basics-Species\, tree size\, spacing\, reasons\, resources\, equipment\nSafety basics\n\nCome prepared to work in the woods in the hot summer: tough hiking shoes or boots\, light outdoor work clothing\, bug dope\, gloves\, and a water bottle- we provide everything else! This is a field event (rain or shine) so dress accordingly. Mild to moderate hiking on rough trails is required. \nThere is no charge for this workshop\, but registration is requested so we know you’re coming! \nRegister Here\n  \nDIRECTIONS to Pfälzerwald Tree Farm: \nPfälzerwald is located in the town of Sheffield\, in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont adjacent to I-91 between\nLyndonville\, north of St. Johnsbury\, and Barton. Whether traveling north or south on I-91\, get off on Exit 24\, the Wheelock/\nSheffield exit. The exit puts you on Vermont Route 122. Make a right turn on to Route 122. Travel Route 122 north approximately 6 miles through Wheelock to Sheffield. (For those coming from the west\, travel to the south end of VT Rte 16\, on VT Rte 15 east of Hardwick\, and go north on VT Rte 16\, turning on to the north end of VT Rte 122. Travel VT Rte 122 south to Sheffield). As you enter Sheffield\, there is an intersection\, with the Post Office on the south side. The road on the north side is Berry Hill Road. Turn and proceed up Berry Hill Road. Follow Berry Hill Road about 1.6 miles\, past the intersection with Blake Pond Road/ Maple Row. At about 1.6 miles\, on the left\, is the gated entrance to Pfälzerwald\, 1619 Berry Hill Road. There is a large PFÄLZERWALD TREE FARM sign to the side of the entrance. Proceed\, elevation- wise\, always up about ¼ of a mile to the house and barn. \nWorkshop sponsored by NorthWoods Stewardship Center and Vermont Woodlands Association.

DESCRIPTION:In Kits and Cubs Day Camp\, campers are encouraged to explore the wonders of nature through stories\, games\, crafts\, and activities to get them outside and moving! Each day brings new adventures exploring the NorthWoods campus while building on the learning from the day before with fun and informative lessons created by our camp staff\, Growing Up WILD\, and the National Wildlife Federation. Daily themes include Playing in the Pond\, Woodland Wonders\, Wildlife Exploration\, and Forest Skills. Mid-week will feature a special trip to Brighton State Park for a short hike\, time with the park naturalist\, and a splash in Spectacle Pond! All participants must be potty-trained.

Take time to connect with other women and deepen your relationship with Vermont’s forests during this overnight retreat. Together we will explore forest stewardship\, wildlife habitat\, and practical skills for being prepared in the woods\, while making plenty of time for conversations\, questions\, and shared experiences. You will leave with new knowledge\, confidence\, and connections. \nWorkshops and Activities Planned: \n– Stargazing/Evening Hike (Jenny Newland and Jess Colby\, NorthWoods Stewardship Center) \n– Forest ecology walk: \n\nWinter birds (Fen Levy\, Audubon Vermont)\nWinter tree ID (Caitlin Cusack\, Vermont Land Trust)\nBlack ash conservation (Jenny Newland\, NorthWoods\n\n– Introduction to forestry tools and chainsaws (Presenter TBD) \n– Introduction to game cameras and tracking walk (Sophie Mazowita) \n\n\n\nThe sleeping accommodations are shared in a bunkhouse that sleeps 16. There are stacked bunks with mattresses and privacy curtains\, a common area\, and 2 bathrooms with showers. The bunkhouse is wheelchair accessible. Participants will need to bring their own toiletries\, pillows\, towels\, sleeping bag/blankets. \nDinner on Friday night and breakfast and lunch will be provided on Saturday.
