SUMMARY:Learning the Language of Loons
DESCRIPTION:Join Vermont Center for Ecostudies (VCE)’s Loon Biologists for a peek into the social lives of Vermont’s Common Loons. We’ll dive into the drama of courtship and territorial displays\, follow along with the growth of chicks\, and share observation etiquette of loon families. This year you can help Eric and Eloise protect our loons by sharing your sightings through our new digital platform: LoonSurvey. We’ll walk through the tool together step-by-step\, ensuring your field notes become a permanent part of Vermont’s conservation legacy. This workshop is open to everyone. No experience necessary—just a passion for keeping Vermont’s loons wild and thriving! \nPlenty of parking is available onsite. \nLoon pair photo by Kathlin Simpkins \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Game of Logging: Women's Beginner & Level 1
DESCRIPTION:Beginner Use and Safety & Level 1 \nCost: $200 per level \nSaturday June 20\, and Sunday June 21\, 2026 \nWomen & Our Woods Vermont invites you to learn to be safe with a chainsaw through these two women-only offered courses: Beginner Use and Safety and Level 1 Game of Logging. \nExpert instructors from Northeast Woodland Training will teach the fundamentals of safe chainsaw use\, precision tree felling\, and equipment care. These courses are designed to introduce the safe handling of a chainsaw\, as well as boosting the confidence level of anyone who has very little or no experience with a saw. \nTopics covered: parts of a chainsaw\, safety\, bucking (cutting an already felled tree)\, and basic maintenance. \nParticipants should bring a helmet with face shield\, eye and ear protection\, or chaps if they have them\, otherwise these will be provided during the class. If you don’t have protective equipment we recommend waiting until after the class to purchase it\, since you’ll learn about different types of protective gear. \nThese courses are an excellent foundation for someone who may go on to attend higher Game of Logging training. Class size is limited to 10 each level. \nLevel 1 participants for this session are required to have completed the Beginner Use & Safety course in the past. \nThe minimum age for Game of Logging classes at NorthWoods is 16 years old. Participants ages 16-17 must have a parent/guardian waiver. \nThis is a special\, women-only event\, but please reach out to use for more information about other upcoming Game of Logging opportunities. For more information and to register contact forestry@northwoodscenter.org. Pre-registration required; space is limited\, so sign up early!

SUMMARY:North Branch Volunteer Lumber Carry (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:Another opportunity for more lumber hauling – same place\, same project\, new plan\, new day!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNorthWoods is seeking volunteers to carry decking and hand railing material from the North Branch Trailhead to the project site –  about 1.5 mi (one-way) on a relatively flat trail.\n\nMany thanks to those of you who joined this past Monday! This next carry features LIGHTER wood – dry hemlock.  Following the season’s first flooding\, NorthWoods and USFWS planned a reroute that will eliminate two longer bridge crossings that are prone to flooding (as many of us have noticed!).  Dusty also reports that the new section of trail will add ecologically notable features/viewing\, including a beaver pond.\n\nSo\, we promise a good time\, lots of bugs\, and more heavy lifting (but not quite as heavy as last time).\n\nRSVP Appreciated: Maria Young   maria@northwoodscenter.org  802-723-6551 x305\n\nMeet: Monday\, June 29\,  9:00  am at the North Branch Trailhead. (directions below)\nBring: Water\, Snacks\, Lunch if you plan to do more than 1 carry\nWear: Hiking boots\, gloves\nOptional: hiking backpack with straps* *many elect to carry supplies in hand \n\nMore about the Trail: https://www.trailfinder.info/trails/trail/north-branch-trail\n\nDirections to trailhead: From the west\, travel 7.3 miles east of Brighton (Island Pond) on VT-105. The trailhead and parking area will be on the left.
