Winter greetings!\u00a0 In this column, I often recognize the very special students at St. Johnsbury School.\u00a0 I would like this week to celebrate our middle school students.\u00a0 This year the middle school is partnering with the NorthWoods Stewardship Center to provide students with some outdoor experiences to build science knowledge and promote teamwork skills.\u00a0 After a recent trip to NorthWoods, students wrote reflections explaining how the experience was beneficial.\u00a0 Here are some of their thoughts.<\/p>\n

Unhindered by snow, St. Johnsbury students work as a team to untie the human knot<\/p><\/div>\n

One student wrote, \u201cIt was a great middle school experience because it teaches us team building skills and teaches us about the outdoors and how nature works.\u201d Several students elaborated on the team building component.\u00a0 One student explained, \u201cThis trip was a good experience because we got to work together and help each other.\u201d\u00a0 Someone else said, \u201cIt really helped us to connect with people we normally wouldn\u2019t.\u00a0 It was good to know that now you had more people you could rely on and trust.\u00a0 That\u2019s important for middle schoolers.\u00a0 It opened our eyes.\u201d\u00a0 Another student proclaimed, \u201cIt taught us how to use teamwork to accomplish the impossible.\u00a0 I think this trip really made a difference in how some, if not most, think.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rope course was definitely popular, and students described how that activity helped them grow.\u00a0 One said, \u201cThe rope course made us use communication.\u201d\u00a0 Another said that the rope course helped them learn how to use classmates for help.\u00a0 Another pointed out that the rope course \u201chelped us to trust our classmates and teachers and work together to form strategies.\u201d\u00a0 One student noted, \u201cWe had to listen to each others\u2019 ideas on the rope course,\u201d and another student followed that with, \u201cThat activity helped us to value and listen to others\u2019 ideas, thoughts, and words.\u201d\u00a0 A powerful comment was, \u201cThe trip was fun.\u00a0 The rope challenge was hard but teamwork can help you accomplish anything in life.\u201d\u00a0 Another powerful comment was, \u201cI think the trip to NorthWoods helped kids step outside of their comfort zone, try new things, and feel good about themselves.\u00a0 For example, some kids were uneasy about trying the rope course but after stepping out of their comfort zone and finishing it, they felt proud and accomplished.\u201d<\/p>\n

The process of strengthening relationships was a key theme in students\u2019 reflections.\u00a0 One student described the change that occurred as the day went on.\u00a0 He wrote, \u201cThe ropes course brought our advisory much more together, and a lot of us built trust.\u201d\u00a0 Another student agreed. \u201cI believe that it helped us (advisories) to come together as more like a family.\u00a0 It helped us to realize that we are there for each other, no matter what.\u00a0 On the rope course, we had to trust that somebody would catch us if we fell.\u201d\u00a0 One student acknowledged, \u201cWe had to rely on each other for support.\u00a0 We had to trust each other and help each other throughout all the activities,\u201d and another student realized, \u201cWhen one person was trying to complete a task that was difficult for them, the other teammates would encourage them to try harder and cheer them on.\u00a0 We often forget to do that for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Students felt they learned about the outdoors as well as about teamwork.\u00a0\u00a0 As one student said, \u201cWe not only got to go experience the outdoors but it was fun and educational.\u201d\u00a0 Students referred to learning how to count how old a tree is, learning how to make better observations, learning how different types of vegetation survive in the winter. One student decided that \u201cit taught us to focus in on our surroundings.\u201d Another student felt that \u201cit gave us a chance to take what we know outside the classroom.\u201d\u00a0 One student wrote, \u201cI know a bunch about trees now!\u201d<\/p>\n

Here is how one student concluded his reflection.\u00a0 \u201cIt was awesome.\u00a0 I can\u2019t wait to go back.\u201d\u00a0 Students at St. Johnsbury School are awesome as well.\u00a0 How exciting that we are involved, as a learning community, in our children\u2019s educational journey!<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
