This summer, the popular Bluff Mountain Trail received substantial\u00a0improvements thanks to a grant from the Vermont Recreation Trails Program, and a new public\u00a0easement secures access to the area for generations of hikers to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were delighted\u201d remarked Luke O\u2019Brien, Trails Director at the NorthWoods Stewardship Center in\u00a0East Charleston, who worked with the Brighton Selectboard to apply for the grant. \u201cIt was the highest\u00a0ranked grant proposal in the State of Vermont this year\u2014a real testament to the value of this project\u00a0and the community support to get it done\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have partnered with a lot of communities over the years to develop projects\u2014many on Town\u00a0Forest lands\u2014and secure funds through the Rec Trails Program,\u201d stated O\u2019Brien who cited Westmore\u00a0and Granby as two other examples.<\/p>\n<p>The grant, administered by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, targets several\u00a0priority improvements on the 1.7-mile hiking trail, including new \u2018puncheon\u2019 bog bridges near the\u00a0summit, erosion control and stabilization, and the construction of a new trail segment that climbs to the\u00a0summit more directly.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Town of Brighton secured a perpetual public access easement for the portion of trail\u00a0located on private lands. \u201cThis permanently protects the Bluff Mountain Trail as a public community\u00a0resource and enhances Island Pond\u2019s status as a recreation destination\/gateway community\u201d says Joel\u00a0Cope, Brighton Administrative Assistant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrighton\u2019s recently updated Town Plan places strong emphasis\u00a0on the value of a diverse recreation-based tourist economy and this project compliments that effort perfectly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When initially re-constructed following the 1998 Ice Storm, the Bluff Mountain Trail began, poetically,\u00a0at the end of the sidewalk on Mountain Street. In 2001, the lower portion of the trail was moved to its\u00a0current location in the Brighton Town Forest, and a connection was made to the original route on the\u00a0Brighton Water Department lands. The Lookout Trail was re-established the following year and, with\u00a0its iron rung ladders, created a challenging, fun hiking loop. A new trail segment completed this June\u00a0creates an additional loop option and explores a variety of terrain, including rock outcrops, ledges, and wetlands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwoodscenter.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/8cb2f0822b4d44698dea30e08eae55e6.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1688\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northwoodscenter.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/8cb2f0822b4d44698dea30e08eae55e6-300x232.png\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.northwoodscenter.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/8cb2f0822b4d44698dea30e08eae55e6-300x232.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27300%27%20height%3D%27232%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20300%20232%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27300%27%20height%3D%27232%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.northwoodscenter.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/8cb2f0822b4d44698dea30e08eae55e6-300x232.png 300w, https:\/\/www.northwoodscenter.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/8cb2f0822b4d44698dea30e08eae55e6-386x300.png 386w, https:\/\/www.northwoodscenter.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/8cb2f0822b4d44698dea30e08eae55e6.png 526w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>As a condition of the Recreation Trails grant, which uses portions of federal and state dollars allocated\u00a0through the Federal Highway Administration, the Town acquired a perpetual public access easement\u00a0from the lone, private parcel separating the Town Forest and Water Department properties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe considered a 10-year easement, but it didn\u2019t seem right\u201d said Gus Lacroix who, with his wife Elaine,\u00a0decided to grant a permanent easement to the Town of Brighton for two sections of trail crossing their\u00a0land. \u201cWe support the trail and felt that if we were going to do anything that it should be in perpetuity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of both the grant and easement agreements, the Town of Brighton holds the public access\u00a0easement and NorthWoods Stewardship Center serves as the trail managing organization. \u201cBluff\u00a0Mountain is our \u2018hometown\u2019 trail\u201d says O\u2019Brien. \u201cIt was one of the very earliest projects undertaken by\u00a0the NorthWoods Conservation Corps and we have invested heavily in it in the years since.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bluff Mountain Trail is also a critical component of a proposed long-distance hiking trail being\u00a0developed by NorthWoods Stewardship Center and the Green Mountain Club (GMC) on the former\u00a0Champion Lands\u2014now the Kingdom Heritage Lands. GMC, the designated \u2018corridor manager\u2019 for hiking\u00a0trails on the Kingdom Heritage Lands, received the nod to begin work in 2010, and a NorthWoods\u00a0Conservation Corps crew constructed the first section of trail\u2014on Middle Mountain in Avery\u2019s Gore.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the route begins on the existing Gore Mountain Trail and accesses the western summit of\u00a0Middle Mountain. Efforts to continue the trail south along the Bluff Mountain Ridge to the existing trail\u00a0will continue over time, as funding permits. When complete, the route could connect as many as twenty\u00a0miles of new and existing trail with the possibility of at least one overnight campsite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would love to see the trail extend from Averill to Westmore someday\u2014maybe beyond\u201d says\u00a0O\u2019Brien who envisions a combination of community paths, backwoods roads and remote mountain\u00a0trails. \u201cIt would make a fantastic hiking resource and really highlight not only the mountains but also the\u00a0culture and history of northeastern Vermont.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now, the Town of Brighton and its visitors can enjoy a top-rated hiking experience out their back\u00a0door.
