NorthWoods\u00a0Stewardship Center presented consulting\u00a0forester Ross Morgan of Craftsbury with the\u00a0first annual George Buzzell Forest\u00a0Stewardship Award at NorthWoods\u2019 Annual\u00a0Stewardship Celebration on Friday, October. The award recognizes extraordinary\u00a0commitment to the sustainable management\u00a0of forests in the Northeast Kingdom.<\/p>\n

As inscribed on a plaque that hangs at\u00a0NorthWoods, \u201cGeorge Buzzell served for 44\u00a0years as Orleans County Forester and was\u00a0widely known and respected for his quick wit, knowledge, dedication to forestry, and support of\u00a0the people involved in its everyday practice. This award is given annually to recognize others\u00a0who demonstrate the commitment to education and care of the forest that are George\u2019s legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

NorthWoods provides forestry education programs to individuals and schools as well as forestry\u00a0management services to landowners. \u201cGeorge was very supportive of NorthWoods whenwe began offering forestry education and technical services almost 20 years ago,\u201d recalled\u00a0NorthWoods Forest Stewardship Institute (FSI) Coordinator Jayson Benoit. \u201cI appreciated\u00a0his guidance, knowledge, and very colorful personality, and the workshops that he led at\u00a0NorthWoods on hardwood pruning and sugar bush management were unforgettable. We hope\u00a0the Buzzell award\u2014by honoring George\u2019s work and spotlighting excellent forestry practice and\u00a0education in the Northeast Kingdom\u2014is a step toward repaying the debt our region\u00a0owes to George Buzzell.<\/p>\n

Nominations for Ross Morgan came in from a diverse group of foresters, forest students, and\u00a0landowners, all of whom spoke of Morgan\u2019s generosity with his time and skill at sharing the\u00a0lessons of the forest. In presenting the award, Benoit highlighted Morgan\u2019s nearly five decades\u00a0of working on forestry issues in the region, and his service as teacher, mentor, philosopher,\u00a0woodsman, woodcarver, and more. \u201cRoss is most committed to his role as an on-the-ground\u00a0forester, and is widely sought after for his wisdom and experience. George was a mentor to many\u00a0foresters, as is Ross today. I can\u2019t imagine a more perfect first recipient of the Buzzell award.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morgan has been a teacher to many\u2014foresters, landowners, high school and college students \u2014\u00a0and several Sterling College alumni were on hand to help honor Morgan, who they refer to\u00a0as \u2018the O.W\u2019 \u2013 the Old Woodsman. \u201cWhen you told someone you had a class with Ross Morgan\u00a0that day, they knew how lucky you were. It was a privilege.\u201d recalls Sterling College graduate\u00a0Cody Sayers. \u201cWhen I think of him, I remember a lot of forest tours\u2014going for a walk and really\u00a0looking at what we were learning about. Also his love of the axe and hand tools. He\u2019d take the\u00a0time to show you how to make one, and was proud to show off his incredible collection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morgan seemed to appreciate the recognition and the chance to reminisce about his old friend\u00a0George Buzzell. \u201cGeorge and I were inseparable friends. We laughed, shared stories, and also\u00a0shared a very sincere interest in silviculture, forest research and how our forests should be\u00a0treated. To share time with a friend like that is a wonderful thing, and to have received this award\u00a0in recognition of that is such a treat to
