Every summer, NorthWoods Stewardship Center recruits local high school\u00a0students for conservation projects in and beyond the Northeast Kingdom. These teenagers join the\u00a0NorthWoods Conservation Corps to build trails, improve wildlife habitats, plant trees on river banks, and\u00a0battle invasive plants.<\/p>\n

While working in the field, Corps leaders teach crew members about the science behind the work. This\u00a0year, crew members will be eligible for three undergraduate science credits from Lyndon Sate College\u00a0(LSC) if they pass the requirements of the Corps projects. The credit can be used at LSC or transferred to\u00a0another college.<\/p>\n

\u201cExperiential learning is central to Lyndon programs,\u201d said LSC President Joe Bertolino. \u201cNorthWoods\u00a0provides Lyndon students an opportunity to work alongside professionals, build job skills, earn academic\u00a0credit and make a positive impact on the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

NorthWoods Executive Director Carol A. Moore is the driving force behind the collaboration.\u00a0\u201cI can\u2019t\u00a0imagine a better way to celebrate the Conservations Corps\u2019 20th\u00a0anniversary,\u201d said Moore. \u201cIt\u2019s a great\u00a0opportunity for local teens to learn in the outdoors while getting paid and earning college credit.\u201d<\/p>\n

NorthWoods piloted the LSC credits program during the 2013 summer season, and LSC Admissions\u00a0Director Vincent Maloney has already helped three Corps members obtain credits. One is North Country\u00a0High School junior Alex Cope, who\u2019s looking forward to college and a major involving music.\u00a0\u201cOne\u00a0strong candidate is acoustical engineering, which involves how sound travels,\u201d said Cope. \u201cThis requires\u00a0physics, and the science credits I gained thanks to LSC will show colleges I have an interest in science.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under Dr. Moore\u2019s leadership, NorthWoods is exploring additional collaborations in research and\u00a0education to expand its impact on forest stewardship and conservation education, and fulfill its mission to\u00a0empower new generations to appreciate, understand and wisely use the land through science, education\u00a0and action.<\/p>\n

Local youth ages 14 to 20 interested in learning and working outdoors this summer as part of the\u00a0NorthWoods Conservation Corps should call Ross Stevens<\/a> or Luke O\u2019Brien<\/a> at NorthWoods, 723-6551\u00a0ext. 117, or visit the Corps Employment<\/a> page to download an application, due April 15.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
