\"Landscapes<\/p>\n

A conservation crew from NorthWoods Stewardship Center will be completing two\u00a0weeks of watershed work this summer thanks to an Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP) grant from\u00a0the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The crew\u2014based in the Caledonia\u00a0County village of East Burke\u2014will address stormwater impairments in the Passumpsic River watershed,\u00a0including projects in Burke and Newark.<\/p>\n

Stormwater runoff is a major contributor to soil erosion, sedimentation and water pollution. The\u00a0NorthWoods Conservation Corps crew will work with partners at Q Burke Mountain and Burke\u00a0Mountain Academy to install Low Impact Development (LID) structures such as rain gardens and\u00a0catchment basins that collect and store stormwater from roofs, parking areas and other impervious\u00a0surfaces before it reaches nearby waterways. LID structures help to reduce water speed and capture\u00a0sediment that impairs water quality and aquatic habitats.<\/p>\n

NorthWoods will also work alongside local road crews to address roadside erosion and stormwater\u00a0runoff. The crew will complete the often time-consuming handwork necessary to stabilize culvert\u00a0headwalls and drainage aprons.<\/p>\n

Each year, NorthWoods employs over 60 young people (ages 15-20) to participate in the NorthWoods\u00a0Conservation Corps. The program offers paid employment, training and environmental education to\u00a0local youth during a six-week summer work season. Additional projects for 2015 include trailwork,\u00a0wildlife management projects and other conservation service projects that benefit the public.<\/p>\n

Established in 1989, NorthWoods Stewardship Center is a nonprofit environmental education and\u00a0conservation service organization based in East Charleston, Vermont. Through three\u00a0programs\u2014education and camps, a youth conservation corps, and the Forest Stewardship\u00a0Institute\u2014NorthWoods inspires individuals to be stewards of their environment.<\/p>\n

Ecosystem Restoration Grants are made available to Vermont municipalities, local or regional\u00a0governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and citizens groups as part of the Ecosystem\u00a0Restoration Program\u2019s on-going efforts to reduce surface water pollution from phosphorus and\u00a0sediment. Funded projects typically involve efforts to improve stream stability, protect against flood\u00a0hazards, improve in-stream and riparian habitat, lessen the effects of stormwater runoff, protect and\u00a0restore riparian wetlands, re-establish lake shoreline native vegetation, and enhance the environmental\u00a0and economic sustainability of agricultural lands.
