This summer, a youth conservation crew from NorthWoods Stewardship Center\u00a0completed several watershed improvement projects in the Passumpsic River Basin thanks to an\u00a0Ecosystem Restoration Program<\/a> (ERP) grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental\u00a0Conservation<\/a> (DEC). The crew cooperated with local towns, non-profits, and businesses to reduce\u00a0stormwater erosion, improve water quality, and enhance river access on the Passumpsic.<\/p>\n

The NorthWoods Conservation Corps<\/a> \u201cBurke Crew\u201d completed over 1000 hours of watershed-based\u00a0training and service work, including improvements to two river access points in Lyndon, numerous\u00a0roadside runoff projects in Burke and Newark, and the installation of stormwater rain garden at Burke\u00a0Mountain Resort<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Burke Mountain rain garden was particularly successful, according to NorthWoods Trail Director\u00a0Luke O\u2019Brien, \u201cthe garden creates a colorful flower bed at Burke that looks beautiful and has the added\u00a0benefit of capturing stormwater from rooftops so that it doesn\u2019t erode and pollute local streams.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stormwater runoff is a major contributor to soil erosion, sedimentation, and water pollution. Low\u00a0Impact Development (LID) structures, such as rain gardens, collect and store stormwater from roofs,\u00a0parking areas, and other impervious surfaces before it reaches nearby waterways. LID structures help to\u00a0reduce water speed and capture sediment that impairs water quality and aquatic habitats.<\/p>\n

This season, 77 youth (ages 15-20) from the surrounding region participated in the NorthWoods Conservation Corps<\/a> \u2013 completing over 19,000 hours of conservation service work. The program provides\u00a0paid employment, training, and environmental education to local youth during a six-week summer work\u00a0season. Projects include a variety of river, wildlife, and trail management projects.<\/p>\n

Established in 1989, NorthWoods Stewardship Center is a nonprofit environmental education and\u00a0conservation service organization based in East Charleston, Vermont. Through three\u00a0programs\u2014education and camps, a youth conservation corps, and the Forest Stewardship\u00a0Institute\u2014NorthWoods inspires individuals to be stewards of their environment.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Ecosystem Restoration Grants are made available to support on-going efforts to reduce surface water\u00a0pollution from phosphorus and sediment. Funded projects typically involve efforts to improve stream\u00a0stability, protect against flood hazards, improve in-stream and riparian habitat, lessen the effects of\u00a0stormwater runoff, protect and restore riparian wetlands, re-establish lake shoreline native vegetation,\u00a0and enhance the environmental and economic sustainability of agricultural lands.
