Earlier\u00a0this month, the Sustainable Forestry Interns took a break from running\u00a0chainsaws to join herpetologist Jim\u00a0Andrews on his search to document\u00a0the species currently found in Vermont, town by town. The day we met\u00a0Jim, he\u00a0was on a mission to document some of the species thought to be\u00a0living in Morgan, VT.<\/span><\/p>\n

After driving to the\u00a0NorthWoods Demonstration Forest access in Morgan, we gathered with Jim\u00a0and two volunteers\u00a0to hear our goal for the day. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Jim started by\u00a0explaining the habitat that we were looking for,\u00a0<\/span>“Most herps prefer\u00a0hardwood forests, and plenty of downed wood. That’s mostly found in\u00a0older forests. And most of them need water-\u00a0seeps, beaver ponds, or streams. We’ll\u00a0see what we find out here.” <\/span><\/p>\n

Our walk started on a narrow woods road,\u00a0hedged in by\u00a0balsam fir- not ideal herp habitat- but we soon arrived at\u00a0the largest beaver pond on the NorthWoods property.\u00a0Almost immediately,\u00a0Jim spotted a painted turtle basking in the distance, one of the species\u00a0he hoped to document\u00a0with photos. And as soon as we started sweeping a\u00a0net around the edge of the pond, the species count started: we\u00a0found the\u00a0three “green faced” frog species (green frog,\u00a0American bullfrog, and mink frog,\u00a0the latter having an onion-y odor\u00a0that Jim pointed out). Continuing our\u00a0search, we waded through the edge of the pond and made our way upslope\u00a0to\u00a0an older northern hardwood stand, where we found seeps and downed\u00a0logs, exactly the habitat we hoped for. As we\u00a0started rustling through\u00a0the leaves and turning over logs and rocks, even more species turned up:\u00a0wood frog, spring\u00a0peeper, American toad,\u00a0northern\u00a0dusky salamander, eastern\u00a0red-backed salamander, and eastern newt.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"On our\u00a0way back to the cars, Jim checked on the list of species we’d hoped to\u00a0find. Not all of them had turned up;\u00a0the pickerel frog and\u00a0spring salamander\u00a0that we’d hoped to find had eluded us. But a couple of our\u00a0finds were\u00a0newly-reported species for the town of Morgan, or species\u00a0that were known to exist but hadn’t been officially\u00a0recorded in the\u00a0Vermont Reptile and Amphibian Atlas. And we put in a good effort,\u00a0learned about habitat and\u00a0management strategies, and had a blast\u00a0chasing, diving, and digging for herps, altogether earning our “merit\u00a0badges”\u00a0from Jim.<\/span><\/p>\n
