Partnering with Lyndon State

2016-12-13T19:12:02-05:00September 19th, 2014|Conservation Corps, Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

On August 24th, 43 first-year students and their instructors from Lyndon State College completed a service project to help NorthWoods get ready for the seasons ahead. Working alongside NorthWoods staff, volunteers cleared brush and performed maintenance on NorthWoods' Leadership Trail, stained the entrance deck, and stacked more than three cords of firewood to fuel our new energy-efficient wood boiler. Thank you, LSC! We wish you a great year. Also at LSC, eighteen lucky students will study the Wilderness Mind this fall, under the guidance of Adjunct Faculty member and NorthWoods' Trails [Read More...]

Favorite Summer Spots

2016-12-13T19:12:02-05:00September 17th, 2014|Education, Highlights, News|

Every summer camper has a favorite spot around the NorthWoods campus. We have yet to take an official survey, but I would guess our Pond would be the highlight. It is spring-fed, and at 18 feet deep in the center, it offers a surprisingly cold, refreshing dip for kids who would rather spend all summer adrift than on land. And of course, there is the Pond’s Edge, home to tadpoles, frogs, crayfish, caddisflies, water boatmen, and a host of other macroinvertebrates in various stages of metamorphosis. We introduce these in a formal pond study at the [Read More...]

2015 Ecosystem Restoration Program Grant

2016-12-13T19:12:02-05:00September 17th, 2014|Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

The Ecosystem Restoration Program Grant (ERP), administered by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, provides funding to programs restoring and maintaining the water quality of Vermont. In past years, NorthWoods subcontracted with the Orleans County Natural Resources Conservation District (OCNRCD) to restore riparian habitat on stream and lake shores in the Memphremagog watershed. This year, with the support of the OCNRCD, NorthWoods successfully applied for the ERP grant directly and will now be running both the Trees for Streams Magog and Lakeshore Buffering program for 2015. These programs consist of planting at least [Read More...]

Collaborating with Landowners on Low-Impact Timber Harvests

2016-12-13T19:12:02-05:00September 17th, 2014|Forest Stewardship Institute|

Thanks to a grant from the Working Lands Enterprise Board earlier this year, NorthWoods has added to our inventory of forestry equipment, and is now offering low-impact timber harvesting as part of our consulting services! With several fall and winter harvests on the calendar, our Forest Stewardship staff will be working in local forests (including the Lydia Spitzer Demonstration Forest) to achieve multiple uses and goals. Our current project in Morgan is focused on creating early-successional wildlife habitat at a scale appropriate to the Vermont landscape, while also extracting low-quality trees [Read More...]

There go Tim & Anika!

2016-12-13T19:12:02-05:00September 9th, 2014|Conservation Corps, Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News, Staff|

While the early signs of Fall are emerging around the NorthWoods campus, there are some glaring absences for those of us who make our home or have a habit of visiting here. I have been looking everywhere for flip flops tossed aside by Anika in a barefoot pursuit of some natural wonder, and I've been straining my ears to hear the notes of a ragtime tune played by Tim on his way through the lodge.  In August, Tim and Anika completed their two year terms, representing the 18th [Read More...]

UVM Researchers Visit NorthWoods

2014-07-22T17:18:32-04:00July 21st, 2014|Miscellaneous|

As part of a UVM forest research project, a field crew of four graduate and undergraduate students recently visited the Spitzer Demonstration Forest to assess forest structure and species in our Forestry for the Birds demonstration harvests. Three harvest areas (about 55 acres total) were treated in the winter of 2012-13 using guidelines developed by Audubon Vermont, foresters, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, with the goal of diversifying bird habitat while improving timber value. Armed with measuring tapes, GPS units, sampling quadrats, prisms, clinometers, spherical densiometers and rain gear, the [Read More...]

Protecting Clean Water with the Echo Lake Association

2016-12-13T19:12:03-05:00July 21st, 2014|Miscellaneous|

On the heels of the newly enacted Vermont Shoreland Protection Act, our Conservation Science staff recently presented a shoreline buffering workshop for the Echo Lake Association. Landowners around the lake learned about riparian tree and shrub plantings completed by NorthWoods (a service available to landowners, and eligible for grant funding), as well as other innovative techniques such as infiltration steps, rainwater gardens and creative landscaping with native plants. Although NorthWoods has planted tens of thousands of trees along streams and lakes over the years, much remains to be done! Contact us [Read More...]
