Medical Waiver

Please read and understand the following release and authorization for treatment.

I hereby provide consent for my son or daughter to participate in NorthWoods’ camp program and activities, either on or off camp property. I understand that while NorthWoods programs are designed and operated by experienced staff who prioritize safety at all times, the risk of injury can not be totally eliminated.

In the event that my child needs emergency medical treatment, I hereby authorize NorthWoods Stewardship Center to obtain emergency medical treatment on behalf of my son/daughter if I can not be reached. I authorize payment of medical benefits to the health care provider for any necessary services and the release of any medical or other information necessary to process claims for visits incurred.

Photo Waiver

NorthWoods uses images of its campers and camp programs in a variety of reports and publications. These images represent NorthWoods and its programs and are essential in documenting and promoting the Center’s accomplishments. By signing this document I give the NorthWoods permission to use images of me/my child in its reports, pamphlets and publications.

Electronics Policy

We do not allow electronics at NorthWoods’ summer camps in any form. Some examples include phones, music-listening devices (iPods), and gaming devices (Nintendo GameBoys etc.). We prefer that all electronics are left at home for the purpose of building an awesome, interactive, and socially stimulating summer camp experience.

Carving Knife Policy

We believe carving is a very useful skill for campers, one that promotes responsibility, creativity, and coordination. NorthWoods may offer wood carving as an activity. We recognize the hazards involved with using knives and will do our best to ensure that this stays a safe camp activity. Each camper will be required to pass our “knife safety test,” which we will go over in our camp groups.

When using a knife:

  • Campers must always ask a camp instructor if they can carve.
  • Campers will sit down in a “safety circle” away from other camp activities, with an instructor close by who is supervising the carving.
  • Concentration will be emphasized during carving. Talking and other distractions are kept to a minimum. If an unavoidable distraction occurs, carvers must sheath their knives and wait until an instructor says it is safe to begin carving again.
  • Campers are only allowed to carve away from themselves.
  • When campers are done carving, they must sheath their knife and return it to the supervising camp instructor.
  • Any injury (even minor) must be reported to the instructor immediately, and the instructor will report to the parent at the end of the camp day or as needed if offsite care is required.

Behavior & Discipline Policy

NorthWoods Stewardship Center participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times while at programs.  In order to provide all participants and staff with an experience that is safe and enjoyable, the following guidelines have been developed.  A caring positive approach will be taken regarding discipline. Camp staff will promote appropriate behavior through positive reinforcement, firm statements, and redirection of activity.  All participants must understand and follow the guidelines set forth.

  • Talk in a pleasant manner.  Foul language, put-downs and bullying will not be accepted.
  • Be safe!  Always obey camp and water/snow/ice rules, van rules, and staff.
  • Treat all equipment and supplies with care and respect.
  • Show respect for the instructors, van drivers, cooks, and fellow campers.
  • Running and excessive shouting while indoors is not allowed.
  • Aggressive behavior that is threatening will not be permitted.
  • Have a positive attitude and have fun!

Listed below are the discipline procedures for campers who are exhibiting unacceptable behavior.  Depending on the severity of the behavior, we may skip a particular step. (i.e. aggressive behavior will not be tolerated.)

Step 1: Verbal Warning

Step 2: Time away from the group.  During this time a participant may have to sit out from activities, including games, crafts, outdoor play, or special events.  Parents/Guardians will be notified of their child’s time away from the group.

Step 3: If a participant persists in unacceptable behavior, a written warning will be issued to the parents/guardians.  The Education Director or Lead Instructor will speak with the child and their parent/guardian.  The parent/guardian will be required to sign the written warning and will be required to pick your child up from camp.

Step 4: After receiving two written warnings, the participant will be dropped from the program.  No refunds will be issued.

Please review these rules with your child before attending a NorthWoods program.  Instructors will review these rules with participants as well.  Thank you for your cooperation.  Let’s have fun!
