It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Oberon, our respected and beloved Barred Owl ambassador, passed away on Tuesday, May 5. Oberon served at NorthWoods longer than any current staff member—she came to live with us in 2006, after being struck by a vehicle and rehabilitated at the Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences. Unable to be returned to the wild, she spent two decades at NorthWoods as our wildlife ambassador, teaching thousands of visitors around the region about the wonder and importance of our avian neighbors. We would like to give a huge thank you and shout out to our friends at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) in Quechee for their continued generosity and dedication as stewards of our region's wild birds. Earlier this year our beloved feathered ambassador, Oberon the Barred Owl —known and admired by many NorthWoods visitors, campers, and students over the years— began to display some uncharacteristic behaviors such as refusing meals and remaining on the floor of his mew (a place no owl wants to be) — a definite indication [Read More...]
Oberon gets a health check and talon trim thanks to our friends Nathan and Grae from VINS. On December 12, Nathan Thoele and Grae O'Toole from the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) made the trip up from Quechee, VT to check on the health of our beloved ambassador owl, Oberon. Nathan is a NorthWoods’ Conservation Corps and AmeriCorps alum, and was Oberon's caretaker during his time with us before moving on to become an Environmental Educator at VINS. Nathan and Grae generously donated their expertise to make sure [Read More...]
Dear Oberon, Mine is a two-part question. How did you come to live at NorthWoods, and why is your name Oberon? Thanks, Who Are You Dear Who Are You, Thanks for asking! “Who am I?” is a question that has stumped owl philosophers for many moons, as I’m sure it has the human variety. While delving deeply into this question on a metaphysical level may cover the pages of several books and screenplays, in order to answer this question in the form of a letter, I will simply give you my [Read More...]
It is mid July and the NorthWoods summer campers have been exploring some pretty cool spots in the Northeast Kingdom so far this summer. This week, Nature Day Campers have trekked on Brousseau Mountain and Mount Pisgah. We've worked on our stealth-walking skills, tracking snowshoe hare and garter snakes through the meadow, woods, and rocks of NorthWoods. We've spent countless hours in and around the pond, cooling off, testing crayfish pinch power, and becoming one with the pond life we have been investigating. We've learned about the unique adaptations of owls, and [Read More...]
