NWSC Participates in Summer Food Service Program

NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston, VT is pleased to announce that they will be participating in the Summer Food Service Program for Children funded by the USDA. The program is designed to ensure that children who rely on free or reduced price meals during the school year continue to have adequate nutrition during the summer. NorthWoods hosts summer camps with an emphasis on nature and science inquiry, team building, nature crafting, outdoor play and exploration, recreation and primitive skill-building and connections to the unique natural resources of the Northeast Kingdom. MWA Supports NorthWoods Education Programs

Memphremagog Watershed Association is supporting NorthWoods' environmental education programs again in 2014 with a $500 education award to be used to subsidize local schools and students participating in NorthWoods programs that focus on the watershed.  NorthWoods education staff has the opportunity to connect local youth with their backyard watershed in a variety of ways from an introduction to water quality, to invasive species removal.  In 2013, MWA offered the first education award. Canada Geese, Robins, Song Sparrows, Red Winged Blackbirds…a cacophony of sounds has just begun anew here at NorthWoods Stewardship Center. You can almost feel the seeds stirring in the soil, and you can definitely taste the sap flowing from our maple trees. (We drink pitchers full of it during staff meetings.) Agnes M. Lindsay Camp Scholarships

NorthWoods Stewardship Center is pleased to announce a grant from the Manchester, NH based Agnes M. Lindsay Foundation to offer scholarships for children attending NorthWoods summer camps, including new Mountain Bike, Earth Sisters, and Science Discovery Camps. Full and partial scholarships are available. NorthWoods Conservation Corps Going To College

Every summer, NorthWoods Stewardship Center recruits local high school students for conservation projects in and beyond the Northeast Kingdom. These teenagers join the NorthWoods Conservation Corps to build trails, improve wildlife habitats, plant trees on river banks, and battle invasive plants. While working in the field, Corps leaders teach crew members about the science behind the work. This year, crew members will be eligible for three undergraduate science credits from Lyndon Sate College (LSC) if they pass the requirements of the Corps projects. 3rd Annual Randonnee Rally

NorthWoods Stewardship Center had a great time teaming up with Burke Mountain and Dynafit Sponsors for the 3rd Annual Randonnee Rally, which celebrates speedy ascents and descents of mountains, under human muscle power. There was a great turnout, and the Olympic spirit was felt by all! This year's event was sanctioned by the United States Ski Mountaineering Association.

This effort supported by ski area engagement, by bringing 100 children into the mix. Conservation Skills for Brighton Afterschool

Students in Brighton's afterschool program had the opportunity to join NorthWoods for a Conservation Skills program held at NorthWoods These students visited NorthWoods, and gained an introduction to the skills and lessons of conservation work.  Conservation Assistant Tim Lancaster modeled a day in the life of a Conservation Corps member, from tool safety and maintenance to the lore, legend, and safe use of an axe, and helped them work as a team to construct a small bridge on the Lang Brook Trail.
