What are our forestry staff up to this winter? Right now the job is working on a low-impact harvest for a landowner in West Charleston using our tractor and forwarding trailer.
According to FSI staffer Sam Perron: “This entry is focused on thinning a Norway spruce plantation to improve future timber quality, creating canopy gaps to help transition this softwood plantation toward native hardwoods (mostly sugar maple, red maple, black cherry), and removing some balsam fir trees in a younger hardwood forest, where the larger balsams have a high risk of blowing over in storms and damaging surrounding, smaller trees.”
