The Women's Crew has been making a splash as NorthWoods' newest local day crew, working on projects throughout the NEK. Women have long made up a larger-than-usual proportion of NorthWoods crews and staff at large but this is the first year the organization has hosted a women's-only crew, consisting of three college-age leaders and three high-school-age members. Crew leader Ash Cray has previously led crews for other organizations and said she experienced many challenges being respected as a woman in a male-dominated field. She has found working with the all-women team [Read More...]

While we often highlight the youth crew leaders and members who train with us and work on USFWS Refuges across New England during the summer season, we also hire for specialty seasonal positions and internships. These employees are trained by and work alongside USFWS scientists on specific conservation goals for that refuge. At the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, this includes Nicole DeFelice, a Shorebird Biological Technician who was slated to be the leader of a Shorebird intern crew this year, but due to COVID-19 is covering the full [Read More...]

The NorthWoods Conservation Corps has completed their trail work at Sentinel Rock State Park. As of now, the park has a 240’ Universal Access trail that spurs from the glacial erratic. From the ADA trail, there’s a small footpath that leads to the lower parking area and a brand new trail that leads to the wooded, multi-use trails. The footpath in the meadow crosses wet areas on bog bridges past an old birch tree with scenic views of Lake Willoughby and the glacial erratic in the distance. The “lollipop loop” through [Read More...]
