NorthWoods Adapts to Climate Challenges

The USDA Forest Service has published a new report, New England and Northern New York Forest Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis: A Report from the New England Climate Change Response Framework Project. This report describes how climate change is expected to affect the 40 million acres of forest in our region. Climate change is already having an impact on our forests, increasing damage from extreme precipitation events and insect pests. Take a Look: Low-Impact Forestry in the Works

What are our forestry staff up to this winter? Right now the job is working on a low-impact harvest for a landowner in West Charleston using our tractor and forwarding trailer. Climate-Adapted Forestry with the NIACS

Preparing for Climate Change in the Spitzer Forest

Think the weather's been a little funny lately? According to climate change predictions, we'd better get used to it! NorthWoods forestry staff took that to heart and recently completed the Forest Adaptation Planning and Practices training presented by the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science, US Forest Service, and USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub. NorthWoods was recently recognized by the Forest Guild for our work in the Lydia Spitzer Demonstration Forest with our enrollment in the Forest Guild Model Forest program. The mission of the Model Forest program is to "recognize places, people, and relationships that foster sustainable forest management and demonstrate successful silviculture," falling in perfect alignment with our own goals for the Spitzer Forest.
